Saturday was a good day for birding in webster county.  In the morning Dawn and I flushed a woodcock while on a walk.  Later that evening Dawn and I were driving home and were thrilled to find a short-eared owl.  It was near dusk and we both saw it dive and pick up a rodent.  It looked back at us as the truck screeched to a stop and then took off again.  We both had good views, and it was definitely a short-eared owl.  First time finding that species near home.  Large 80 acre area of broom sedge, little blue, and indigo with some non-natives.  Cool day!

Really a great year for Short-eared Owls.  Their population numbers seem to be way up right now.  CB
